Have you ever been invited out to coffee with an old friend or new acquaintance, only to arrive at the Starbucks counter and have them utter a knot of eccentric, whimsical words, something along the lines of ‘can I have a skinny extra tall, decaf, half-pump, no-whip, frappa-dappa-lappa-chino'? This is when I tactfully head for the door. Even the Starbucks staff are sick of this nonsense!

I do not subscribe to the ‘ostentatious coffee consumption culture' that has presented itself over the last few years. Coffee is a gift from the heavens and should be treated and enjoyed as such. Never would I have dared to alter my coffee drinking habits. My coffee order has always remained unchanged – until I was recently introduced to Bulletproof coffee (a.k.a Butter coffee).

Bulletproof Coffee Recipe And Benefits For Health

Bulletproof coffee is a delicious butter and coffee emulsion drink that will not only make the effects of the caffeine last longer but will eliminate the effects of the so called ‘caffeine crash'. By adding butter and MCT oil (a clear and flavourless liquid extracted from coconut oil) you enhance the flavour of your coffee as the fat in the butter envelops and concentrates the flavour of the coffee, while the MCT oil provides nutritional goodness.

What Is MCT Oil?

Medium-length chains of fats called triglycerides are easier for your digestive system to absorb than the long-chain fatty acids found in many foods and as an added bonus they contain less calories. Some studies have shown that consuming MCT oil releases two hormones (Leptin and Peptide YY) that can suppress the feeling of hunger.

Why Add Butter

Adding butter to your coffee will add some essential nutrients and add a creamy consistency while slowing down the release of caffeine, providing you with a more sustained energy high. If you are prone to experiencing jitters from coffee, adding butter will significantly reduce (if not eliminate) those side effects.

The additional nutrients and slow release of the caffeine makes you feel, hence the name, Bulletproof.

What Coffee Should I Use?

As you might have guessed I am somewhat of a coffee snob, therefore I will say you should not use instant coffee, not only in this recipe, never! The subject of coffee is a very deep rabbit hole I will gladly take you into but for the purpose of this article, I will keep it brief. 

If you are looking to get the most flavour out of your coffee start with grinding the beans yourself, pre-ground beans will do the trick, but they do lose some of their aroma due to oxidation.

However , while bean-to-cup machines are usually the best way to brew coffee at home, a coffee press or percolator will do the trick.

But seriously do not use the instant coffee, they are the ‘PG Tips' of the coffee world.


Health Benefits & Weight Loss

Paleo and Keto diets (low-carb, high-fat diets) have adopted the use of bulletproof coffee as a source of instant energy as the MCT oil is metabolised in the liver and quickly absorbed by the body. It is said that bulletproof coffee triggers weight loss by way of ketosis (a process by which the body burns fat as a source of energy) and can only be achieved in absence of carbohydrates.

People not necessarily on a keto or paleo diet may drink bulletproof coffee to help quash the feeling of hunger, thus eating less.

Don't Overdo It!

Please don't start drinking 20 cups of bulletproof coffee everyday just because you read that it may help you shed a few pounds. The addition of butter makes this coffee high in saturated fats. Saturated fats can form part of a healthy diet when consumed in reasonable amounts.


How To Make Bulletproof Coffee?

After brewing your real coffee (I am watching you😐) working quickly, pour it into a blender (I use a NutriBullet Blender) add your butter and MCT oil and pulse until you have reached a deliciously decadent creamy consistency. If you do not have a blender, you can use a milk frother. I have noticed though that some frothers do sometimes struggle to completely emulsify the mixture.

If you prefer sweet coffee, add some honey, or sugar or go all out like the people over at Starbucks and add some Himalayan Shaman sanctioned pumpkin skin spice (or whatever they put in theirs).

Ingredients
  

  • 250 milliliter Coffee
  • 30 milliliter Butter
  • 15 milliliter MCT oil

Method
 

  • Brew your favourite coffee (any coffee will do the trick)
  • Working quickly while the coffee is still hot, add all ingredients to the blender.
  • Pulse a few times until mixture is completely emulsified.
  • Pour into your favourite mug/cup & ENJOY!
Chefs Tips
  • Life is too short to drink bad coffee. Brewing a proper cup of coffee will make this recipe so much better.
  • You can use an immersion blender or a milk frother if you do not have a large blender, just note that some milk frothers tend to struggle with completely emulsifying the mixture.
  • Heat your cup/mug with boiling water to ensure you will enjoy a hot drink.

Iced Bulletproof Coffee!

We all like a good, iced coffee on a hot summer’s day this recipe works wonders for iced coffee as well! After following the recipe, simply add a few blocks of ice and enjoy as is or pulse another few times, adding more ice to achieve your desired consistency. Please note that fat becomes solid at cooler temperatures, this can cause the emulsion to break therefore I would recommend enjoying as soon as you've made it.
