The Main Things To Consider When Buying a Non-Stick Frying Pan

1. Material

Non-stick frying pans can be made of different materials, such as aluminium, stainless steel, ceramic, and cast iron.

Each material has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Aluminium pans are lightweight and heat up quickly but may not be as long-lasting as other materials.

Stainless steel pans are durable and easy to clean but may not distribute heat as evenly as other materials.

Ceramic pans are eco-friendly and non-toxic but may not be as durable as other materials.

Cast iron pans are heavy and durable but may take longer to heat up.

2. Coating

The non-stick coating is what makes the pan non-stick. There are different types of coatings, such as PTFE (Teflon), ceramic, and diamond-infused. PTFE is the most common coating known for its durability and non-stick properties. Ceramic coatings are eco-friendly and non-toxic but may not be as durable as PTFE.

3. Size

Non-stick frying pans come in different sizes, so you must choose one that suits your needs, your kitchen and the hob you use. A smaller pan may be sufficient if you cook for one or two people. If you are cooking for a family, larger pans may be necessary.

4. Handle

The pan’s handle should be comfortable to hold and stay cool while cooking. Some handles are made of plastic or silicone, while others are made of stainless steel. Some are fixed, and a screw attaches to others.

5. Price

You should choose one that fits your budget and meets your needs. However, remember that more expensive pans may be more durable and have a longer lifespan. As my mum always reminds me ‘It’s always cheaper in the long run to buy quality”

Best Non-Stick Frying Pans: FAQ

What Does PFOA Free Mean?

PFOA  is short for Perfluorooctanoic acid and is a synthetic chemical used to manufacture non-stick polymer coatings used in cookware like frying pans and saucepans and used in many other industries.

Although cooking equipment manufacturers have not used PFOA since 2013, this “forever chemical” is already in the environment, our water and our bodies (in tiny quantities) and is here to stay.

If you have old frying pans or other non-stick kitchen equipment that has seen better days, you could be unwittingly ingesting PFOA and risking health conditions such as cancer. I recommend you do yourself a favour and “throw that shit out” and buy a cast iron or ceramic pan. I remember a favourite old pan of mine that was peeling, and I didn’t know what health issues it might have caused, so when I read about PFOA and PTFE, etc) I threw it out and bought this pan.

How To Measure A Frying Pan?

Place your frying pan on a flat surface and measure along the top with a tape measure from the outer edge to the outer edge directly across the centre. Pan sizes are based on the diameter of the pan.

What Can You Cook In a Frying Pan?

Steak
Bring your steaks to room temperature and rub liberally with olive oil, salt, pepper, and herbs like thyme or rosemary. Place into the hot frying pan with a knob of butter on medium-high heat and sear until caramelized on one side. Turn over and do the same on the other side. The timings of the searing for steaks, in particular, depends on the cut’s thickness, but if you have a meat thermometer, a rare steak will read 50oC, medium rare 55oC, medium 60oC and well-done 65oC. The steak should be basted with butter throughout cooking for the best flavour and crispy crust. Rest before eating. Here’s an amazing recipe: how to cook rib-eye steak in a frying pan.

Lamb Chops
Heat your frying pan on medium-high heat with a liberal splash of olive oil, and season your chops. Place the chops in the pan and sear for 2-3 minutes on one side and 1-2 minutes on the other. If you have a thermometer, your chops should read 57oC internally for a perfect medium, the preferred temperature for lamb. Rest before eating.

Pork Chops
Heat your oil on medium to high heat and season your chops. Add a knob of butter and the chops to the pan simultaneously. Cook for 2-3 minutes on the first side, flip and cook for 1-2 minutes on the other side. Cook until the juices run clear when cut. Rest before eating.

Sausages
Heat the frying pan with a dash of oil on medium to high heat for perfect fry-up sausages. Place the sausages in, making sure not to crowd the pan and cook until golden on one side. Flip, repeat on the other side, and cook until the juices clear. Sausages are very high in fat, so they stay juicy even if they are cooked a little longer, so don’t be afraid to get a good crispy skin.

Fish Fillets
Heat oil in your frying pan and season both sides of the fillet with salt and pepper. Cook skin side down, pressing gently to prevent the fish from curling up. Cook until the skin is browned, then flip and cook on the other side until the flesh flakes away with a fork.

Salmon
Salmon is best served rare, so it only requires a quick cook. Season the skin of the salmon and heat the frying pan on medium to high with some olive oil. Cook until the skin is crispy, then flip and cook for a few minutes on the other side, depending on how thick the cut is.

What’s The Best Frying Pan Material?

Cast Iron
Classic cast iron is a pan material that has been around for centuries, and for good reason! Pre-seasoned cast iron pans will last a lifetime if you take care of them, and since they come seasoned, all that is involved is a thorough cleaning after each use. This thick metal takes a long while to heat, but it maintains the heat for a long period in a very even manner. These pans are non-stick, chemical-free and benefit your health as they impart iron into your diet, an essential vitamin for our bodies. Cast iron pans can be heavy, so be aware of that, and if you like the idea of cast iron but not the weight, check out our review of this lightweight cast iron pan.

Anodised Aluminium
This lightweight material is specially sealed so the metal doesn’t leech into the food, making it completely safe to cook with and unaffected by acidic foods. The pans are also non-stick, easy to clean, and completely scratch-resistant. Regarding speed, aluminium is a great solution as it is very quick to heat up and very convenient.

Ceramic
Ceramic frying pans are heavy-duty pans that take a while to heat up but easily maintain even heat. They are non-stick, easy to clean and PFOA-free. They are also the healthier option as they are non-reactive, contain no chemical additives and require less oil in the cooking process. The only downside to this pan is that they tend to be fragile.

Copper
Another old-school pan material, copper, is a great conductor. The pans are relatively expensive. However, they are incredibly long-lasting due to their corrosion-resistant nature if taken care of, making them worth the investment if you want to save up. They heat very slowly and can experience hot spots across the surface.

Stainless Steel
Stainless steel pans are a common and reasonably priced option that creates a very even heat to cook with in the most accurate way possible. The pans heat up quickly for timely cooking and are easy to clean once you’re done. They are non-reactive and durable, making them a healthy, safe option for all your frying needs.

What Type Of Handle Should You Choose?

There is a wide variety of handles depending on the type of frying pan you choose. Some are suitable for oven use, and others will burn or melt. Think about what you are going to use your frying pan for! If you only use it on the top of the stove, the handle doesn’t matter.
However, if you want to finish your steak perfectly, it should go into the oven for a period of time to rest. This means you must choose a handle that can handle the heat. But in choosing this type of handle, you are often left with a burning hot handle to manage. So a Silicone Frying Pan Holder is the perfect solution to ensure you don’t burn yourself. One of these will ensure you get a great grip on the pan without exposure to burns. I recommend the Lodge Silicone Hot Handle Holder.

Best Way To Clean And Maintain Your Frying Pan?

After each use, the best way to maintain your frying pan is to wash it thoroughly with hot, soapy water. This is particularly important for non-stick frying pans. Soak the pan in hot, soapy water and scrub with a non-metallic scouring pad if any stains persist. If you want to go the extra mile, you can season your pans with a little oil and a sprinkling of salt every few months.

The Best Non-Stick Frying Pans: Summing Up

The best non-stick frying pan solves the problem of food sticking and minimises the amount of oil you’ll need for cooking. The best frying pans are easy to clean, affordable, and lightweight. Contrary to popular belief, most non-stick frying pans are oven-safe, PFOA free and dishwasher-safe (depending on the material used.)  For instance, I always handwash with a little detergent with cast iron pans. I chuck most of my other pans into the dishwasher, although a good frying pan is easy enough to clean by hand – up to you!

YouTube player

Cast iron frying pans are incredibly durable but require more maintenance than their non-stick counterparts. On the other hand, stainless steel frying pans provide fast, even heating, which allows them to give you a great sear. Aluminium frying pans are affordable; like copper, they are great heat conductors.

All the frying pans on this list are excellent in their own right. When choosing the best frying pan, it all comes down to several factors. Identify the features most crucial to you before investing in a particular pan. For instance, if you value durability over ease of use or weight, you might want to choose one type of frying pan over another. The best frying pan is versatile, durable, and offers good value for money.
