Hearty beef pot pies with green beans and mashed potato

For The Filling

  • 640 g Beef goulash 
  • 320 g White onion (finely chopped)
  • 200 g Carrots (cubed)
  • 40 g Chopped garlic
  • 60 ml Olive oil
  • 40 g Cake four
  • 2 g Brown sugar
  • 500 ml Water for stock
  • 150 ml Beer (preferably Guinness)
  • 4 g Coarse salt
  • 2 g Turmeric

For The Pot Pies

  • 320 g Puff pastry
  • 1 Egg

For The Green Beans

  • 400 g Green beans (top & tail)
  • 20 g Chopped garlic
  • 20 ml Olive oil
  • 2 g Turmeric

For The Mashed Potato

  • 800 g Large potatoes (peeled & cubed)
  • 20 g Butter
  • 60 ml Milk
  • 2 g Turmeric spice
  • 2 g Fine salt


For The Filling

  • Heat oil in a large pot.  Brown beef on all sides. Remove & set aside.
  • Fry onions, carrots & garlic in the same pot. (Add more oil if needed) Cook until golden & caramelized.
  • Sprinkle flour, salt & pepper into the pot & cook, while scraping the bottom for 1 minute.
  • Return meat & juices to the pan, add beer & beef stock. Bring to a boil. 
  • Reduce heat & simmer for approx. 2 hours until tender & sauce has thickened.

To Make The Pies

  • Spoon the beef mixture into serving dishes.
  • Top with pastry lid, press down firmly on the sides to seal. Cut a small cross in the middle of the lid.
  • Brush with beaten egg & bake @ 200'C for 20 minutes until golden.
  • *Alternatively, you can shape the pies into individual little pies. (As in the photo)

For The Green Beans

  • Heat oil in a frying pan. 
  • Add garlic & green beans & sauté.
  • Season with salt.

For The Mashed Potato

  • Place mashed potato in a pot over medium heat. Stir to evaporate any excess water.
  • Add butter & milk, stir through until creamy.
  • Season with salt & pepper.
Chefs Tips
If you are up to it, I would recommend making your own puff pastry. It is not an easy task and will take a very long time to make but is totally worth it. But if you can find a good pre-made puff pastry, you can go with that as well.
Make smaller individual pies for the little ones, they love it!
